SOUTH SALT LAKE — A home invasion that included an attack with a dumbbell resulted in one arrest and police searching Monday for another assailant.

About 2:15 p.m. Friday, two men forced their way into a home near 3400 South and 450 East, said South Salt Lake police detective Gary Keller. One of the two occupants in the home was repeatedly hit with a tool, possibly a wrench, Keller said. The man suffered mostly injuries to his hands as he tried to protect his head during the attack, he said.

As the intruders were leaving, one threw a dumbbell at one of the victims, hitting him in the shoulder, Keller said. The men were also armed with a knife, according to Salt Lake County Jail documents.

The men took cell phones and other items. The occupants of the home told investigators they did not know the intruders and did not assist detectives in helping to identify a man who was arrested, jail records state.

Leonel Vargas Jr., 21, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of aggravated robbery, aggravated assault and a restricted person in possession of a weapon.
