FARR WEST, Weber County — The driver of a semitrailer truck was jailed Thursday after he crashed into the back of minivan and then told investigating troopers that he'd used methamphetamine, the Utah Highway Patrol said.

Jeffery Lee Howell of Rexburg, Idaho, was in stop-and-go traffic on I-15 near 2700 North when he hit the back of the minivan in front of him, said trooper Cameron Roden.

Howell, 48, told troopers he wasn't aware that he'd struck the van, saying he thought he'd run over a bump in the road, Roden said. Howell later told investigators he'd used meth shortly before the crash, the trooper said, adding that no one was injured.

Howell was booked into the Weber County Jail for investigation of DUI, following too closely, causing an accident involving property damage and falsification of a log book. The charges are all misdemeanors.

Howell was released from the jail after posting $2,804 bail.
