Highway closures to facilitate bridge work

A pair of highways will be closed for parts of the weekend because of bridge-replacement project work, the Utah Department of Transportation has announced.

Overnight closures are planned for bridge work on Interstate 80 at 2300 East and the first half of the U.S. 89 bridge over I-15 in North Salt Lake.

I-80 westbound between Foothill Boulevard and State Street in Salt Lake City will be closed from 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, through 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25 to replace the westbound 2300 East bridge, install overhead signs and for scheduled routine maintenance of the bridge. Traffic will be reduced to two lanes on Saturday. The detour will be I-215 or Foothill Boulevard.

I-15 southbound in North Salt Lake will be closed from 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25, through 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 26, to replace the first half of the U.S. 89 bridge over I-15. UDOT is advising motorists to use I-215 to I-80 or the southbound exit to Beck Street as alternate routes. Northbound I-15 will remain open with only two lanes during the closure this weekend.

The latter closure originally had been advertised to occur Saturday night to Sunday morning.

The second half of the U.S. 89 bridge will be replaced next week, during which time I-15 will be closed in both directions between I-80 and I-215 from 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, through 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31.

UDOT cautioned that there will be no safe viewing areas for the public to watch either of the bridge replacements. However, live streaming video of the 2300 East bridge move will be available at www.udot.utah.gov/innovate80.
