WOMEN'S SOCCER: Two days after opening up a six-point lead over second-place BYU-Hawaii, Dixie State continued to play solid soccer Thursday afternoon against Hawaii Pacific University. Deadlocked at the break, the Red Storm scored a pair of goals in the second half to defeat the Sea Warriors 3-1 at Atherton Field on the HPU Hawai'i Loa Campus at Kaneohe, Hawaii.
Three different players scored for Dixie State (10-3, 9-0 Pac West) who moved up two spots to No. 8 in the Division-II West regional rankings. Hawaii Pacific (7-6-1, 5-4) were kept to only five shots — all coming in the first half.
Erin Beeston put the first goal on the board after taking a left side cross from Mikala Wilkes and centering it right into the goal at 13:59. HPU's Meghan Fuller found the first-half equalizer at 27:32 putting the ball in the upper right corner with an assist from Dyanne Anderson.
The match remained tied through halftime until the 80th minute when the Red Storm cashed in the eventual game winner. Shannon Larsen sent a cross toward the net and Jordyn Hutchinson converted the goal to put Dixie State up 2-1. Robyn Wall volleyed a shot to the post for an insurance goal with four minutes left.
Tonya Smith made one save in goal while the Dixie State defense played great keeping HPU's offense at bay in the final half.
The final test on a fourmatch Hawaiian road trip is Saturday on the Big Island against the University of Hawaii-Hilo.
MEN'S SOCCER: After two wins to begin a critical four match trip on the islands, the Dixie State squad looked to extend its strong play against the Sea Warriors of Hawaii Pacific University. But on Thursday afternoon at Atherton Field in Kaneohe, Hawaii, HPU shutout the Storm 3-0 to snap a two-game Dixie State winning streak.
Max Anton scored the first HPU goal by following a rebound of Chance Bukoski's initial chance in the 38th minute. Hawaii Pacific (9-2-1, 6-2-1) took the 1-0 lead into the half.
Dixie State (5-7-1, 3-6) had a prime chance to knot the match in the 50th minute, but a Kevin Young shot hit the crossbar and stayed out of the goal.
Hawaii Pacific extended its lead with two goals late in the second half by Kimo Komomua and Alan Albertazzi.
For Dixie State, Young and Jose Rodriguez each had four shots. Tyler McAninch saved four of seven HPU shots on goal.
The Red Storm complete their Hawaiian island excursion on Saturday against Hawaii-Hilo.
