Man charged with shooting at vehicle

A Bountiful man was charged with attempted murder after he was accused of firing shots at a passing vehicle and then hiding the gun in a lunch box, according to documents filed in 3rd District Court.

Michael Genova, 26, was standing at a bus stop at 500 East and 3300 South in South Salt Lake on Oct. 14 with a lunch box in hand as a vehicle passed by. Genova fired several rounds from a firearm toward it, hitting one man in the abdomen, charging documents state. The injured man managed to get to St. Mark's Hospital, where a doctor removed a .22-caliber bullet.

Genova had fled the scene, but police later located eight .22-caliber casings on the ground.

Police later saw Genova walking in the area of 400 East and Woodland Ave. (3220 South) in South Salt Lake with an object in hand. Police saw Genova duck behind a fence and come back without the object. Genova was taken into custody while an officer went to investigate what was behind the fence and located a discarded lunch box, which had a firearm and other property inside, court documents state.

Genova was charged with attempted murder with injury, a first-degree felony; three counts of discharge of a firearm with injury, all second-degree felonies; obstructing justice, a second-degree felony; and possession of a firearm by a restricted person (someone previously convicted of a felony), which is a third-degree felony, according to court documents.

His cash-only bail has been set at $100,000.
