Utah lost 16,300 construction jobs between September 2008 and the same month this year, according to federal government statistics and an analysis conducted by the Associated General Contractors of America.
The 17 percent drop leaves the state with 77,800 construction jobs. Including mining and logging, the state lost 15 percent, or 16,200 jobs, leaving it with 91,200 jobs.
Salt Lake City lost 10,200 jobs in construction, mining and logging during that period, a loss of 22 percent, leaving it with 36,800 jobs. Provo-Orem lost 23 percent to 3,700 jobs. Ogden-Clearfield lost 19 percent to 3,200 jobs. Logan lost 24 percent, leaving it with 2,500 jobs. St. George lost 24 percent, leaving it with 4,700 jobs.
By comparison, Nevada lost 27.8 percent and Arizona saw a 25.3-percent drop. Forty-one states had double-digit percentage decreases. Only Louisiana saw an increase, with 2.1 percent.
