Park City cross country coach Jeff Wyant is often asked what he's feeding his girls team that dominated Wednesday's 3A cross country championships.

"Miles," he said. "There is no magic potion; they simply out-trained other teams. These girls worked hard. They've put in the work. They earned it."

Not only did the seven varsity girls earn the 3A title, they accomplished a season-long goal to set a state record for points.

"We finished second last year with 34 points," said Gillian Gorelik, a senior who won the state title individually as well with a time of 18:33.3. "The best 3A score was 33. The best score of any team was Fremont (a 5A school) from years and years ago, 26 points."

In earning seven of the top 12 places, the Miners girls team finished with a record 23 points. Behind Gorelik was North Sanpete's Kody Kleven (18:41.1) and third was Rebecca Cunningham, Park City (19:02). The remaining Miners finished as follows: Alison Williams, fourth; McKenzie Snyder, sixth; Alisse Walker, ninth; Alexis Lee, eleventh; and Annie Orr, twelfth.

"It's so good to win for myself, but to have my team win along with me, I love it," said Gorelik.

In addition to setting a new state record and earning a gold team trophy, the runners' success this season meant an impressive new uniform for the state meet.

Last year Gorelik sported some funky green and black tiger striped spandex. The others wanted to order them in Miner colors — red and black. Wyant agreed, but on one condition. If the girls won at BYU and Murray, where they compete against 4A and 5A schools, he'd allow them to wear the eye-catching outfits.

"You can't wear those if you're going to lose," said Wyant.

The real challenge for these runners, he said, is next month's Nike meet against some of the top teams in the country. Last year they came in sixth place and this year they expect to do much better.

"They really made up their minds to come in and run with the big teams," he said.

In the 3A boys championship, Cedar claimed the team title, while Canyon View junior Matt Wright earned top individual honors with a time of 16:04.4. He edged Judge senior Max Lamb, who finished second with a time of 16:20.6.

Cedar coach Derek Pruitt didn't know what to expect until mid-season because of the addition of a talented senior and the development of several other runners throughout the season.

"We knew we had it in us after region when we beat Canyon View," said Danny Stevenson, a junior, who finished sixth with a time of 16:29.2. "We had the confidence and we felt like we could take it."
