High school football notebook: Powers collide in Region 10 tilt
Class 3A juggernauts Park City, Wasatch to meet in classic clash
Before a football had been thrown, carried or kicked this fall, almost everyone in Class 3A figured that Park City and Wasatch would probably meet on the final week of the regular season to decide the Region 10 championship.
Conventional wisdom prevailed.
After blowing through their respective regular-season schedules — the closest game either team had was a 23-point win, by Wasatch over ALA — the two juggernauts of Region 10 will trade swords with one another on Thursday evening, with an outright region championship awaiting the winner.
On paper, it promises to be a classic matchup of contrasting styles, when No. 3 Park City (8-1) makes the 20-minute bus ride down Highway 40 to square off against No. 4 Wasatch (8-1).
Park City, with stars Erik Walker, Dylan Chynoweth and Mat Christensen in tote, will attempt to beat Wasatch with its bruising power running game, while Wasatch, with stars Payton Davis, Mike Davis and Cory Nielson in tote, will attempt to beat Park City with its high-flying spread offense.
Both offenses have been fun to watch this fall, and Park City's has been close to unstoppable at times.
Chynoweth, a senior fullback, leads the state in rushing touchdowns (23) and is second in rushing yards (1,560). Walker, a senior quarterback, has added 1,137 yards and 15 TDs, and Christensen has the potential to be a difference-maker for the Miners.
Going the other way, Payton Davis has put up pretty special numbers at quarterback for Wasatch this fall. Heading into Week 10, he leads Class 3A in passing touchdowns (27) and passing yards (2,272). Receivers Mike Davis and Nielson lead 3A in receiving TDs with 11 apiece.
