Layton High probes are ongoing
Two investigations are ongoing regarding alleged incidents involving Layton High School officials, Davis School District officials said.
There is no deadline for either investigation, but the district is striving for a resolution soon, said Davis district spokesman Chris Williams.
"Every investigation is different," he said. "People are brought in. Things are looked at."
Layton High Principal Paul C. Smith has been on paid administrative leave since Oct. 12. He said district officials told him it is standard procedure during a financial audit. He also told the Deseret News he hasn't done anything wrong.
Layton High's head secretary retired Oct. 12, but district officials won't say whether her retirement that day has anything to do with the school's finances, if it is connected to the principal being placed on leave or whether her retirement had already been planned.
Assistant Principal Muriel Mann is serving as interim principal at Layton High. The school is hiring a new head secretary.
In a separate investigation, district officials are looking into allegations about the school's former choir director, Joseph Everton, 62, who may have had a relationship with a then 17-year-old female student. The girl graduated last spring and married Everton in September.
A police investigation that wrapped up Oct. 13 found Everton's actions were not criminal. No charges will be filed.
Everton was placed on paid administrative leave Sept. 30. A substitute teacher is handling Everton's choir-director duties.
Details on the two investigations are not being released to the public in order to protect the rights of district employees.
"With any investigation, you hope to find the information that is needed to answer any questions and give the people the opportunity to give their points of view," Williams said.
