WOMEN'S SOCCER: Chandra Salmon, a sophomore midfielder/defender from Provo, Utah (Provo HS), anchored Utah State's defense to a 1-0 win over Fresno State and a 1-1 tie against second place San Jose State. Salmon was part of the defensive core that kept the Bulldogs off the scoreboard, making several key tackles for Utah State's third shutout of the season. The sophomore helped the USU defense give up just one goal in two matches.
This is the first career WAC Player of the Week honor for Salmon. Junior forward Lauren Hansen and sophomore defender Summer Tillotson have also earned WAC Player of the Week honors this season. Last season, the Aggies were honored with Player of the Week honors five times, including returnees Sydne Garner, Lauren Hansen, Shantel Flanary and Lindsey Smart.
Utah State (8-7-2) hits the road for its longest trip of the season, heading to Honolulu to take on Hawaii. Last week, the Aggies concluded a brief two-match homestand with a win against Fresno State and a tie against San Jose State. After earning four points last week, Utah State is in third place in the WAC standings.
The Aggies have three regular season matches remaining. After traveling to Hawaii, Utah State will return home to take on Louisiana Tech on Friday, Oct. 30 and WAC-newcomer New Mexico State on Sunday, Nov. 1 to end the regular season.
MEN'S TENNIS: Aggies will play in their final fall competition at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mountain Region Championships. The Championships are held in Las Vegas starting Wednesday and ending Saturday.
The Aggies' most recent action was at the Utah Invitational, hosted by the University of Utah, Oct. 15-Oct. 17, between BYU, Boise State, Weber State, Utah and Utah State. Juniors Jakob Asplund and Bryan Marchant swept the doubles competition, capturing the doubles title after defeating WSU's Henning Hipp and Spencer Marchant, 8-4, in the final round.
USU will continue to participate in the ITA Mountain Region Championships throughout the week, before halting action until spring.
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Emily Kortsen has been named the Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending on Sunday, it was announced on Monday. The award is voted on by a state media panel.
It is the first time in her career that Kortsen has been named Utah State's Athlete of the Week.
