HOLLADAY — Investigators say Sumi-Ko Wiley was always walking around her neighborhood. But rather than taking a stroll for exercise, detectives say she was actually casing out her area.

Monday, Wiley, 22, was charged in 3rd District Court with 23 felony and misdemeanor counts including theft, burglary, theft by deception and unlawful use of a credit card.

"If it wasn't nailed down, it was OK for her (to take)," said Salt Lake County Sheriff's Lt. Don Hutson.

For about three months, investigators believe Wiley would walk around her neighborhood, in the area of 4800 South and 1500 East, and take any opportunity she could find to burglarize her neighbors' homes.

"She would wander around her neighborhood and victimize anyone she could," he said.

In one incident, Wiley was cutting through a backyard on her way to a bus stop and found the residents outside. After talking to them for a little bit, Hutson said Wiley pretended to continue on to catch her bus, but then turned right around and went to the front door, knowing the residents were in back, went into the wife's bedroom and took her purse and credit cards.

At least two residents were burglarized twice, according to court records. At least nine different homes had items stolen, court records state.

Any items she could lift was fair game, police say. A lawn mower, VCR, trimmer, Nintendo Wii, jewelry, CD player, stereo system, golf clubs, firearm, Playstation and other electronics were all stolen by Wiley, according to the charges.

In one incident, the stolen item was too heavy for Wiley to carry, so she put it inside a trash can and rolled it down the street, Hutson said.

Nearly everything she took was sold to a pawn shop, he said. In addition to selling stolen items, Wiley was also involved in credit card fraud and identity theft, according to Hutson.

"Anything to make money, to feed her narcotics addiction," he said.

Earlier this month, Wiley was charged with an additional count of theft by receiving stolen property, according to court records. And in August she was charged with shoplifting and attempting to pose as another person.
