Citizens-only rights

Some state laws hurt as many as they help. Often, the beneficiaries of a law are easy to spot and the victims remain hidden — which is why the law remains in force.

For example, every fall, the Deseret News runs a heartwarming story about some nice kid who gets the in-state tuition rate despite her parents' flagrant abuse of our nation's immigration laws. But the Deseret News fails to identify students who would have enrolled except that our state system has a "soft cap" on enrollments and those slots were taken by illegals.

I guess their stories aren't cool enough for the front page.

Americans owe all people decent treatment, but we owe the rights of citizenship only to our own.
