Big Sky honors Weber State's Higgins, Toone
OGDEN — Weber State's Cameron Higgins (offense) and Tim Toone (special teams) — along with Montana State's Dane Fletcher (defense) — have been named the Big Sky Conference players of the week.
Higgins, a 6-foot-2, 210-pound junior from Kai, Hawai'i, completed 23-of-30 passes (76.6 percent) for 290 yards with a career-high tying five touchdowns in No. 15 Weber State's 49-10 home win over Sacramento State. The
2008 Big Sky Offensive MVP and Walter Payton Award candidate had an efficiency rating of 212.9. Higgins fired four of his touchdowns in the first half as the Wildcats cruised to a 35-7 lead. Higgins leads the nation with 2,109 passing yards through seven games. Higgins has been named Player of the Week twice this season and six times in his career.
Toone, a 5-10, 175-pound senior from Peoria, Ariz., set a Big Sky Conference record with a 95-yard punt return for a touchdown in Weber State's 49-10 win over Sacramento State. The 95-yard punt return, which bettered the previous conference record by 1 yard, gave the Wildcats a 21-0 lead in the second quarter. It was one of four touchdown's Toone scored on the day. He caught TD passes of 5, 8 and 25 yards, finishing the game with
eight catches for 154 yards. He had two punt returns for 109 yards. Toone became the seventh player in league history to amass 3,000 career receiving yards. This is Toone's third career Player of the Week Award.
Fletcher, a 6-2, 245-pound senior from Bozeman, Mont., tallied 11 tackles — three for loss — a sack and a quarterback hurry in Montana State's 31-24 overtime victory over South Dakota. The defensive end helped send the game into
overtime when he sacked the South Dakota QB with less than 20 seconds remaining in regulation from the MSU 49-yard line, sending the game into overtime. Fletcher ranks second in the nation in tackles per loss at 2.08
per game. This is Fletcher's third career Player of the Week honor.
