Lauren Payne (Readers' Forum, Oct. 18) wants to define "destroy(ing) America" as enacting laws contrary to her positions. She thereby accuses President Barack Obama of "trying to destroy America." This is ridiculous. I could quite as reasonably apply the same standard to conservative policy.
She's right about one thing, though: It's just more rhetorical negativity to say that conservatives are, by rule, racist. But it's just as negative and senseless to say that Barack Obama is "trying to destroy America." Perhaps she doesn't recognize the irony in criticizing one blast of rhetorical backwash while she promotes another.
