High school soccer: Soaring Eagle coasts to win over Falcons
Sophomore Kaitlyn Flynn scored the first goal and the last goal of the match to lead the Juan Diego Soaring Eagle over the Canyon View Falcons 4-0 in the 3A quarterfinals. The win advances Juan Diego to the semifinals for the fourth straight year.
"This puts us in the semis five out of the last six years, and we'd really like to get over that hump and win," Juan Diego coach Jamie Schock said. "We've worked all season to get to this stage, and we've really found our rhythm."
The Soaring Eagle controlled the tempo of the game from the word go, scoring three quick first-half goals before the Falcons settled into several strong defensive stands.
After Flynn's early score, Juan Diego's second goal was the result of several impressive passes. Vicki Shimkus got the ball on the left side off a pass from Jenn Flynn in the middle; Shimkus dribbled behind two defenders and passed it across to open freshman Emily Bruder in front of the goal, Bruder sent it sideways about five feet to an even more open Annabah Glasser; and Glasser kicked it home for the score.
Bruder, Juan Diego's leading scorer with 24 goals on the season, also assisted the third goal of the game on a nice cross to Shimkus for the score.
The Soaring Eagle start two sets of sisters —Emily Bruder and goalie Allison Bruder and both Flynns. And all made big contributions in the win.
"I like it," Schock said with a laugh. "There's nothing wrong with a little sibling rivalry."
When either Flynn gets the ball in the middle of the field, good things happen offensively for Juan Diego.
"I like to make the combinations going forward as we take it to goal," Katie Flynn said.
"It's fun playing with my sister because we have a very similar style of play," Jenn Flynn said. "We like to get everyone involved and not make it a one-person game."
