Canada: Circus death

MONTREAL — A Cirque du Soleil performer has died after falling off a trampoline during a training session in Montreal.

Cirque du Soleil said Saturday Oleksandr Zhurov (Sacha) died in a Montreal hospital Saturday a day after falling off the trampoline.

The company said the 24-year-old Ukrainian performer was doing general training exercises for the world-famous circus when the incident happened at their training center. He joined the company a few months ago.

Canada: Ship seized

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — Canadian officials say they have seized a ship carrying 76 people off the Pacific coast province of British Columbia.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police Sgt. Duncan Pound says those on board say their goal was to reach Canada. Authorities did not been disclose where the ship originated or what the nationality of those on board is.

Iran: Reporter released

TEHRAN — Iran released a foreign Newsweek reporter on bail Saturday almost four months after he was arrested following the country's disputed presidential election, as embattled opposition leaders promised to press on with their campaign against the country's rulers.

Maziar Bahari, a dual Iranian-Canadian citizen who was released after posting bail of 3 billion rials ($300,000), is among more than 100 prisoners put on mass trial as part of the government's attempts to silence opposition protests that President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's June 12 re-election was fraudulent.

Mexico: Hurricane Rick

MEXICO CITY — Hurricane Rick strengthened into an "extremely dangerous" Category 5 storm off Mexico's Pacific coast Saturday and forecasters said it could strike the Baja California Peninsula next week.

The storm had sustained winds of 160 mph, the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami reported, though it said the storm was likely to lose some of that punch before hitting land.

Forecasters said Rick was projected to stay well off the coast for several days before bending east over cooler waters and hitting the Baja California Peninsula, perhaps as a Category 2 hurricane, sometime Wednesday.

Mexico: Grisly death

TIJUANA — Police in this northern Mexican border city found a man's nude, mutilated body hung by the neck from an expressway overpass Saturday, the second such grisly discovery in nine days.
