JENSEN, Uintah County — A 64-year-old Colorado woman died Friday following a head-on collision with another vehicle, officials said.

Karen Smithey of Dinosaur, Colo., was heading east on state Route 40 around 3:40 p.m. near Jensen when her Chevrolet Blazer was hit by a Ford F-150, said Utah Highway Patrol trooper Ted Tingey.

The truck was traveling west when it swerved into oncoming traffic to avoid striking another vehicle that was attempting to turn south. The truck then hit Smithey's SUV head-on, the UHP reported. Tingey said Smithey's 38-year-old daughter was in the passenger seat at the time of the accident and broke both her leg and pelvis. Both Smithey and her daughter were wearing their seat belts.

Smithey's daughter, the 39-year-old female driver of the truck and the woman's 9-year-old son were all transported to Ashley Valley Medical Center. The driver of the truck suffered internal injuries that aren't life-threatening. The boy, who was not wearing a seat belt, also sustained minor injuries.

Troopers do not believe drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.
