WOMEN'S SOCCER: Southern Utah had more shots on the board, but the ball only seemed to find the back of the T-Birds' net as UMKC shocked SUU with a 2-0 victory in Kansas City on Friday afternoon. The win is the first for the Kangaroos as the first-year program moves to 1-13-1 and 1-4 in the Summit League on the year, while the Thunderbirds drop to 3-9-2 overall and 1-3-1 in conference play.
SUU's Riley Bassett gave UMKC keeper Jami Finnell her first test of the afternoon as her shot in the sixth minute was saved by the Summit League leader in saves this year. UMKC put the first goal on the board six minutes later as a Thunderbird penalty led to a free kick from 25 yards. Ariel Rank took the free kick for UMKC and placed it into the top corner of the goal for the first lights on the scoreboard.
The Thunderbirds held UMKC without a shot for the next 28 minutes while recording a total of 13 shots of their own during the first half. The single goal was the only differential between the two teams at the half.
The 1-0 lead continue to hold until the Kangaroos struck again in the 74th minute as Zaina Mayer beat a charging SUU keeper Breana Fitzgerald to a ball and played it into the empty net. The goal was despite another noticeable shot differential by the Thunderbirds as SUU recorded 11 shots to two by UMKC in the second half.
Bassett recorded six shots during the game, matching the Kangaroos' team total in shots. Makell Southworth was just behind her with five shots, including three on goal. Finnell finished the game with 11 saves in goal to keep the Thunderbirds off the board.
Southern Utah will be back on the pitch on Sunday, facing Creighton University. That game is scheduled to kick-off in Omaha, Nebraska.
