WOMEN'S SOCCER: Friday's first-place battle between Utah Valley and Houston Baptist ended in a 1-1 double-overtime tie Friday at Houston, leaving both teams an unbeaten 2-0-1 halfway through the Great West Conference regular season.
The Wolverines (3-9-1) and Huskies (6-6-2) both entered the match with GWC wins at North and South Dakota and, in addition to still hosting both Dakota schools, will have a rematch on Monday at UVU's Clyde Field in Orem.
"Houston Baptist is a good team. They're athletic with a lot of speed," said UVU head coach Brent Anderson. "It really was a good match. The girls are disappointed with the tie but happy with the effort."
After a scoreless first half, Houston Baptist scored its goal in the 59th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Brandi Hart netted her second goal of the season for the Huskies on assists from Arielle Rodriguez and Chelsea Thornhill.
Nicole Archibald tied the game in the 72nd minute on an assist from Brianne Larsen, giving her three goals on the year to tie her with Athena Maher for the team lead.
The Wolverines outshot the Huskies 15-12 overall with HBU owning a 7-4 edge in shots on goal. Archibald had seven shots herself, including two on goal.
Hailey Brown started in goal for UVU and had two first-half saves. Tasha Bell played the final 65 minutes and had four saves. Michelle Rich played all 110 minutes at keeper for HBU and finished with three saves.
The Wolverines will stay in the Houston area for a non-conference matchup on Sunday morning in Huntsville, Texas, against Sam Houston State.
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: The Wolverines will conclude their three-match week with a non-conference meeting with Idaho State tonight at 7 p.m. in Pocatello.
The Wolverines (13-7) beat the Bengals (8-10), 3-1, earlier this season at the Wolverine Invitational. In that match, UVU senior outside hitter Camie Manwill posted a double-double with 10 kills and 16 digs, while junior outside hitter Kayli Broadbent added 17 kills. Sophomore setter Chelsea Fa'alogo finished with 29 assists and senior libero Allyce Jones added 10 digs.
Utah Valley enters the contest with a win after beating Texas-Pan American in a Great West Conference match Thursday night in Orem.
Broadbent leads the Wolverines in kills with 292. She has posted a season-high 23 kills in each of the last three matches. Manwill has 223 kills.
Junior Kathleen Stevens leads the team in service aces with 30, while Jones leads in digs with 380 and Fa'alogo leads in assists with 733.
Following the match with Idaho State, the Wolverines travel to Southern Utah on Tuesday before host Great West Conference foe Houston Baptist in their second-to-last home match of the season Friday, Oct. 23.
