Weber State football: Resurgent Wildcats still have title hopes in mind

OGDEN — Weber State earned its breakthrough win of the 2009 season and got right back in the Big Sky Conference title race when it beat Eastern Washington last week.

But it was just one win, and the Wildcats will have to continue to duplicate their last effort in order to stay in Big Sky contention. Their next opportunity comes today when they host Sacramento State in their homecoming game at Stewart Stadium. Kickoff is at 1:30 p.m.

"It's a week-to-week thing," said coach Ron McBride. "They should obviously feel better about themselves. But you can't sit around and be happy with yourself. You have to try and continue to get better and not be satisfied because you played one great game."

Weber State can't take Sacramento State lightly, either. The Hornets are 2-1 in conference play for just the second time in school history. They have a quality running back in Terrance Dailey and feature an offensive line that's surrendered just six sacks this season. After allowing Eastern Washington to score 56 points three weeks ago, Sacramento State's defense has improved in wins over Portland State and Idaho State.

"Everybody in this league is pretty good," McBride said. "The Big Sky is a strong conference. You've got four teams ranked in the top 20 in the country. It's like the SEC of (FCS) football."

Weber State has never lost to Sacramento State in Ogden, posting a 6-0 record at home against the Hornets, with four of those wins coming by double digits. The Wildcats clicked on all cylinders against Eastern Washington and they think they can retain their momentum against the Hornets today.

"Our vibe is definitely on a winning level now," said receiver Mike Phillips. "Everyone just feels like we can win. We're just trying to build off this win (over Eastern Washington) and keep moving forward."

Quarterback Cameron Higgins shook off an early pick-six against Eastern Washington last week and threw for 237 yards and two touchdowns. But he has to take care of the ball today, as the Hornets returned two interceptions for scores against Idaho State last week.

Running back Trevyn Smith continues to be a workhorse, as he rushed 32 times for 143 yards and a score against the Eagles. He took the lead in the conference rushing race with the effort.

Weber State's defense has been boosted by the return of defensive lineman Ryan "The Beast" Eastman, who recorded three sacks against Eastern Washington.
