MORGAN — After a dominant first half in which they jumped out to a 21-6 lead, the Morgan Trojans looked like they would have an easy time dispatching Judge.

But the Bulldogs refused to play dead, and a furious second-half Judge rally came up just short in the red zone, when a fourth-and-1 snap to quarterback Daniel Shiramizu went awry. The ball found its way into the hands of Morgan lineman Cameron Streadbeck, and the Trojans held on for a 35-28 win in Friday night 3A football action.

Morgan remains unbeaten in Region 11 at 4-0, setting up a showdown with Juan Diego next week for the region title.

The Trojans ate up clock and field in the first half, amassing 199 yards rushing and getting touchdown runs from Lawson Toomer and Jordan Wamsley — who combined for about 300 yards in the game — and one from Connor Jensen.

But on the first play of the second half, Shiramizu kept the ball on the option and scampered 72 yards to make it first-and-goal. That set up Christian Barbiero's 5-yard touchdown run, and Shiramizu ran for the 2-point conversion to bring Judge within a TD at 21-14.

Morgan came back with Randon Prochnow's 8-yard touchdown run, but Broc Warner's point-after kick missed.

Morgan then forced Judge into a three-and-out, and the Trojans took over.

Morgan looked to be on its way to icing the game when it gained a first down after facing third-and-23. But then Wamsley fumbled — the first of two blemishes on his otherwise superb, 200-yard night. Judge's Christian Weidle scooped it up and took it 70 yards for a touchdown. Pat Gibbs' extra point made it 27-21 Morgan.

Morgan stuck to its game plan. That meant giving the ball to Wamsley, who took a handoff to his left, turned the corner and willed his way to a 34-yard touchdown. He then added the 2-point conversion to put the Trojans up 35-21.

"He's our guy ... we're gonna ride his back," said Morgan coach Kovi Christiansen of Wamsley. "When things went wrong, (our players) continued to battle."

The Bulldogs (3-6, 2-2) kept coming. Judge faced fourth-and-7 just past midfield, and Shiramizu hit Barbiero for 15 yards to keep the drive — and the Bulldogs' hopes — alive. It eventually led to Paul Clark's second touchdown of the game to again bring Judge within a score.

Morgan (7-2, 4-0) looked like it was on its way to running out the clock until Wamsley fumbled again, and Judge recovered at the Trojans' 45.

But six plays later, Streadbeck's fumble recovery ended the threat.
