SPRINGVILLE — Pretty much every single Springville soccer player that got on the field Thursday afternoon in the 4A quarterfinals did well.

And considering the Red Devils went 17-18 deep at times, that's saying something.

Overcoming early nerves against Woods Cross in the second round of the playoffs, Springville settled down and played the way it's capable of playing. And in the end, that proved to be too much for Woods Cross to handle.

A great move by Autumn Woods down the right wing helped set up Springville's opening goal by Cayson Manwaring in the 58th minute, and star striker Lexi Eaton iced the game with a late strike as the Red Devils emerged with a hugely-impressive 2-1 quarterfinal win.

"I feel like we were too nervous to play our best game, but once we got going, we did what we needed to do," said Woods. "I don't feel like it was our best game, but I think it was a good step on the way there. We just need to step up our game going into the semis."

Springville will attempt to take that next step up when it faces Timpanogos in the 4A semifinals at 6 p.m. Tuesday inside Juan Diego's Soaring Eagle Stadium.

Having struggling for the opening 10 minutes on Thursday, Springville eventually settled down and largely controlled play throughout the rest of the half.

The Red Devils, however, failed to create many clear-cut scoring chances, something that was talked about at length at halftime.

Springville's players responded in the second half by creating several opportunities, and after coming close on multiple occasions, Woods' phenomenal work set up the game's opening goal in the 58th minute.

From near midfield, Woods took the ball and went. And went. And went. Woods beat two Woods Cross players and kept her balance before sending a dangerous ball towards the 6-yard box.

From there, the ball fell to Manwaring, who took a touch and then unleashed a deflected shot that nestled into the back of the net.

There may have been an element of fortune about the deflection, but there was nothing lucky about what Woods did to create the goal.

Asked to describe what she did afterward, Woods said simply that she was "just playing the game," but for those who got to see it, it was a lot more than that.
