HURRICANE — The previous two home games were nail-biters for the Hurricane Tigers and their fans, so Wednesday's regular-season home finale was a welcome respite for those with weak hearts as the Tigers rode the strong legs of junior fullback Robert Reeve to a title-clinching 28-7 victory over the Cedar Redmen.
Reeve raced 40 yards for a touchdown on the Tigers' second play from scrimmage and added a 31-yard scamper later in the period to set up a short scoring run by Jacob Stout as Hurricane set the tone early.
"We ran a trap on that (scoring) play, and the hole was so huge I wasn't even touched. Our line was just knocking them out of the way," said Reeve, who ended up with 138 yards on 15 carries.
While Reeve was setting the tone offensively for Hurricane, linebacker Jaden Seely hit the high notes defensively for the Tigers. The rangy senior had three tackles for loss in the first quarter alone and kept the pressure on throughout the game as Cedar's potent offense managed just 241 yards of total offense.
The Redmen, who have been able to keep turnovers to a minimum this season, struggled Wednesday, fumbling six times, losing three to the Tigers.
Their first turnover was the biggest, as Adam Rice busted loose on a 30-yard run early in the second quarter and appeared to be headed for the end zone, only to lose the ball at the Tigers' 5-yard line.
The Redmen never threatened to score again until Carson Ludlow hit Treyson Fullmer with a 29-yard scoring pass midway through the final period.
Bryson Warby did do some tough running for Cedar, leading the Redmen with 90 yards on 17 carries, with Rice adding 60 yards.
Hurricane lengthened its lead in the third quarter as Jacob Pugh scampered from 27 yards out before Reeve capped the scoring with a 2-yard plunge up the middle.
The victory clinched the Region 9 title for the Tigers, who have rattled off eight straight victories since dropping their season-opener to Skyline.
Cedar can assure itself of a first-round home game in the upcoming state playoffs with a season-ending victory against crosstown rival Canyon View next week, while Hurricane can finish its perfect region campaign by knocking off Desert Hills.
