Ali Forsberg could not believe her good fortune.

Less than a minute into Viewmont's first-round playoff game against Skyline, the Viking sophomore suddenly found herself in prime position to notch a goal. Aleesha Flandro had dribbled deep into Eagle territory and flicked an easy pass back to Forsberg.

Forsberg made the most of it, slotting the ball past Skyline keeper Anna Cassell and burying a shot in the left corner of the net.

"I have never scored a goal that fast," Forsberg admitted.

Her quick strike set a tone that Viewmont maintained for 80 minutes to earn a 3-1 victory over the Eagles on Tuesday afternoon.

It marked the third consecutive season that the Vikings dispatched a higher seeded opponent in the first round of the 5A girls soccer tournament. For Skyline, it ended up being the Eagles' third straight first-round loss, dating back to 2004.

Viewmont coach Eric Landon urged his players to adopt an aggressive mentality from the opening whistle in order to find a rhythm against a normally stout defense. He thought the quick strike from Forsberg set the right tone.

"The pregame talk was: Let's set the tone early," Landon said. "Let's come out in the first 10 or 15 minutes and get after them, and they did it in 28 seconds. What else can you ask from them?"

Giving up an early goal rattled Skyline, and it quickly changed the whole complexion of the game.

Forsberg helped Viewmont extend its lead in the 21st minute when she fed a lead ball to Shaylee Petersen. Cassell came out to challenge Petersen as she cut into the goal, but she cut away from the diving keeper.

From there, Petersen turned as she neared the end line and crossed the ball toward the right post from the opposite flank. Her shot hooked perfectly inside the post to make it 2-0.

Viewmont tacked on its final goal in the 57th minute when Petersen tried to curl a shot inside the right post and it clanked off the post. The ball bounced out to the feet of Flandro, who was parallel to the post. Flandro threaded it inside the post to give the Vikings a three-goal lead.
