Bombers blast way to title

But duo showed deft touch on greens, too

LEHI — For the second time in five years, long-drive bombers Bobby Wilson and Jason Zuback have proven that a golfer who drives for show can also putt for dough.

At Tuesday's Sorenson Champions Challenge at Thanksgiving Point, Johnny Miller's annual two-person scramble, Wilson and Zuback again wooed the gallery with upper-atmospheric drives — several of which came to rest more than 400 yards from the tee box. But in winning their second Champions Challenge, the long-drive specialists also made the most putts and hit the best short shots.

"It kind of sends ripples throughout the whole sport that we can play," Zuback said.

"You have to have a good short game on this course. You can't just get up and whack it," Wilson added.

Wilson and Zuback, who also won the event in 2005, finished at 12 under par in the difficult high-wind conditions. Tying for second, a shot back at 11 under par, were the teams of Rocco Mediate/Bradley Shaw, Ian Baker-Finch/Brett Quigley and Andy Miller/Scott Miller. The team of former BYU stars Mike Weir and Dean Wilson, winners in 2003 and 2004, finished two shots back at 10 under par.

"The course was tough," Baker-Finch said. "The wind was strong, and the greens were fast."

The sonic-boom drives started immediately when Zuback launched a 400-yard shot off the first tee that came to rest only 56 yards from the hole, a drive that helped the Wilson/Zuback team start off with a birdie. On the 453-yard, par-4 fourth hole (normally No. 13 at Thanksgiving Point) both Wilson and Zuback drove the green. On the next hole, a 622-yard par-5, Wilson's downwind drive gave the team a second shot of just around 100 yards.

All that distance, however, would have gone to waste if not for some spectacular wedge shots and putts. After driving No. 4 green, Wilson drained a ridiculous 35-foot putt for eagle that had at least 12 feet of break in it. Three holes later, on the par-4 seventh, both drove into trouble, which left them with a second shot out of waist-high weeds along the Jordan River. But the duo did much more from there than just avoid a disastrous bogey when Wilson clanked in an 80-yard wedge shot from the junk for another eagle.

"That was a huge swing right there," Wilson said.

Under the conditions, Wilson and Zuback figured they were leading when they birdied the par-5 14th to go 11 under par. But when Baker-Finch chipped in from 50 feet for birdie on No. 15 and Wilson and Zuback both missed a 12-foot birdie putt, there were suddenly two teams at the top.
