High school football notebook: Fremont rebuilding effort moving along

Considering that Fremont went just 1-9 a season ago, many wondered how the Silver Wolves would respond to adversity this fall. And those questions only grew louder when Fremont dropped back-to-back league games to Weber and Syracuse nearly a month ago.

The Silver Wolves, however, never put their heads down.

Far from it.

Fremont's players continued to believe in themselves, and the way they've since responded has been nothing short of stellar.

Since losing to Weber and Syracuse to fall to 2-2 in Region 1 and 2-3 overall, Fremont has rattled off three league wins in a row, including a clutch 30-26 victory over Viewmont last weekend, to clinch a playoff berth.

And the Silver Wolves are hardly done yet, as they'll wrap up their regular season on Friday with a huge home game against league-leading Davis.

"I'm just proud of our kids," said Fremont coach Kory Bosgieter. "We've had some ups and downs in the season, and they've battled through it. I think the biggest reason we'll battle is because of the investment that they've made. They put a lot of time into this, a lot of sacrifice, and I don't think they're about to let it go."

There were a number of reasons why Fremont struggled the way it did a season ago, not least of all was the fact that Bosgieter, in his first year with the program, broke in no fewer than 20 new starters over the course of the season.

When last year finished, however, the Silver Wolves committed themselves to doing everything they could to be ready for this fall.

"When the (2008) season was over, they just grabbed the bull by the horns and started running with it," said Bosgieter. "They've done a really good job, so hopefully it continues."

To continue Fremont's run, the Silver Wolves will have to find ways to get past Davis on Friday.

At 5-1, Davis is tied in the loss column with Syracuse (6-1) for first place in Region 1 and is one game ahead of Fremont (5-2) in the loss column.

"We've got a heck of a challenge in front of us this week," said Bosgieter. "Davis is a very good football team. They're obviously ready to get after it after having a bye week and having one get away from them the week before that."

For his team to have a chance on Friday, Bosgieter says he thinks his offense will need to control the ball and keep the Darts' all-everything running back Tanner Hinds on the sidelines.

"It would be really nice if we could take over the game up front and keep him off the field," said Bosgieter.

RIVALRY GAME TO DECIDE TITLE: Rivals Bingham and Riverton will square off on Friday at Bingham High, with an outright Region 3 title awaiting the winner.
