Starstruck

Bronco Mendenhall is obviously a good coach.

It's just that sometimes you wonder if he's all the way, you know, humanoid.

Last week, when discussing his team's progress, he said, "On any given day, we can play and compete with most teams in the country. … (It's) too early to say (they're) great because I don't think we've played great to this point in terms of the collective."

Two questions.

First, did he really say "collective?"

And second, wasn't he part of the Borg in "Star Trek"?

Enter, stage right

Guess you heard the news last week about radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh wanting to become part-owner of the St. Louis Rams.

This just in: Keith Olbermann has already gone on record saying the Ram offense is getting way too conservative.

Battleship down

According to the Urban Dictionary, a new term has sprung up: getting Kragthorpe'd.

The term references Louisville football coach Steve Kragthorpe, whose record is 13-16 since taking over the Cardinal program.

Story continues below

Used as a verb, it means "To take something previously in great condition and completely screw it up upon arrival."

As in, "Wow, my parents really Kragthorpe'd that party."

Just wondering: Is that anything like Crowtoning a job interview?

Strange pairing

The Sporting News recently released its latest "Best Sports Cities" edition and it was a great year for Pennsylvania, with Pittsburgh and Philadelphia ranking 1-2.

It wasn't bad for the Wasatch Front, either. The Salt Lake-Provo area ranked 19th, just behind Denver-Boulder and just ahead of Indianapolis.

Salt Lake outranked other cities such as San Diego, Baltimore, San Francisco, Cleveland, St. Louis and Milwaukee.

For the record, Logan finished 101st, Ogden 151st, Orem 183rd and Cedar City 209th.

So how come Provo gets lumped in with Salt Lake, and vice versa, but Orem has to stand alone?

Isn't that like including Manny and Moe with the Pep Boys but forgetting about Jack?

Curling, possibly?

Last on the list of 399 best sports cities was Auburn, N.Y.

Auburn native and Buffalo sports radio host Jeremy White to the Chicago Tribune: "What's going on in Oneonta (rank: 391) that is so spectacular?"

Enemy within

Texas Tech football coach Mike Leach recently banned players from using Twitter.

That's because linebacker Marlon Williams recently tweeted, "Wondering why I'm still in this meeting room when the head coach can't even be on time to his (own) meeting."

So teams and coaches have seen the enemy, and the enemy is them.

Ah, for the good old simple days when you could just blame the press for all the divisiveness.
