Four people were injured Monday in two crashes on I-15, the Utah Highway Patrol reported.
Both crashes happened around 7 a.m. — one near 8000 South, the other near 4700 South, trooper Cameron Roden said.
The crash on I-15 southbound at 8000 South involved a construction worker who was driving a pickup truck in a road-construction site and slammed into a parked flatbed truck loaded with two sections of pipe, Roden said. The man had to be extricated from the pickup truck. He was airlifted to a Salt Lake hospital in critical condition.
The crash remains under investigation. The man's name has not been released.
Roden said the crash on southbound I-15 at 4700 South occurred when a passenger got out of a stalled vehicle and lifted the hood to determine what was wrong. The vehicle, which was still in the travel lane, was hit from behind by two other cars.
Julio Monreal, 33, was knocked backward and struck his head on the road.
Roden said Monreal was flown to a Salt Lake hospital in critical condition. Two other people also were taken to the hospital by ambulance. Their injuries are not life-threatening.
Citations are pending in the second crash, Roden said.
