WOMEN'S SOCCER: Vermillion, S.D., It turns out getting into Great West Conference play was the cure that Utah Valley needed as the Wolverines defeated South Dakota, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon for their second straight convincing win.
After entering conference with one win and five goals scored in 10 games, UVU (3-9-0, 2-0-0) has outscored its Great West opponents 7-1 thru two games including a 4-1 win at North Dakota on Friday.
"Once again we came out ready and with a good mentality and that led to some good opportunities early. We had a lot of good attacks throughout the game. It was also a very solid defensive effort," said UVU head coach Brent Anderson. "We were offsides 11 times and we have to make that adjustment and play a lot smarter but overall I'm happy with the way the team played."
Athena Maher and Camille Broderick both scored for the second straight game and Lauren Bluth added her first goal of the year. Kendra Buchanan assisted on both Maher and Bluth's goals and all three Wolverine goals came in the first half.
Maher, who was credited with the game-winning goal, scored first, in the 17th minute for her team-leading third goal of 2009. Bluth made it 2-0 in the 31st minute and Broderick capped the scoring in the 39th when she put in her second goal of the year. Broderick leads UVU with seven points this season.
Tasha Bell and Hailey Brown combined to pick the Utah Valley's second shutout of the season. Bell recorded two saves in 60-plus minutes and Brown had three saves in just under 30 minutes in goal.
The Wolverines got off season highs with 27 shots, 15 of which came on goal.. The Coyotes (3-9-0, 1-2-0) finished with 16 shots, five on goal.
Utah Valley continues Great West action with a match at Houston Baptist next Friday, Oct. 16 at 2 p.m. MT. The Huskies also swept their trip through the Dakotas and will enter Friday's contest at 2-0-0 in Great West play. On the road trip, the Wolverines also face Sam Houston State in a non-conference match on Sunday, Oct. 18 at 10 a.m. MT.
