Fugitive arrested in 1968 jet hijacking

NEW YORK (AP) — A man wanted for hijacking a flight out of New York 40 years ago was arrested Sunday after arriving on a flight from Cuba, federal authorities said.

Longtime fugitive Luis Armando Pena Soltren was wanted for his role in the Nov. 24, 1968, hijacking of a Pan Am flight bound for Puerto Rico. The 66-year-old Soltren was arrested at John F. Kennedy International Airport, federal prosecutors said.

Soltren was expected to be arraigned Tuesday in Manhattan on a 1968 indictment.

"As the 1968 charges allege, he terrorized dozens of passengers when he and his cohorts wielded pistols and knives to hijack Pan American flight 281," federal prosecutor Preet Bharara said Sunday.

DNC canceling ad after Dole's protests

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Democratic National Committee is canceling a television ad touting GOP support for health care reform after protests from one of the Republicans mentioned, former Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole.

The ad quotes a series of Republicans — including California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist and former Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson — saying the health care system needs to be reformed.

Dole is quoted saying: "I want this to pass. ... We've got to do something."

The ad then accuses current GOP congressional leaders as "siding with the insurance companies" to fight health care reform.

Dole told ABC News on Sunday that he objected to the ad's criticism of the current Republican leadership.

Ex-Marine accused of firing on police

LYNN, Ind. (AP) — An ex-Marine who served in Iraq has been charged with three counts of attempted murder of a police officer after he allegedly fired on police.

Authorities say 26-year-old Andrew Ward of rural Lynn fired four shotgun blasts at three officers Friday night at a rural farm house. No officers were hurt.

After that weapon and another malfunctioned, officers used a stun gun to subdue Ward. He was being held without bond Sunday. He also faces preliminary charges of criminal recklessness, battery and intimidation.
