Utah Jazz notebook: Trip to Europe leaves Jazz a little jetlagged

Back from Europe. Back to work.

Now that they've had a couple of nights rest back in their own beds, that's the approach the Utah Jetlaggeds are taking this week.

The fact that they practiced on a Sunday — normally a day off from practice — is a prime example of the Jazz's back-to-business mentality.

Coach Jerry Sloan gave his team Friday and Saturday to recuperate from their six-day trip to England and Spain, but he wanted them back on the court ASAP even though Utah's next game isn't until Thursday.

"We've got to get back on our feet," Sloan said, "try to get some running in and see if we can get them back together."

That was easier for some.

Frequent flier Andrei Kirilenko, for instance, had no problem getting readjusted to life in the Mountain Time Zone. During the offseason, he often travels back and forth from the U.S. to Russia and France, so the Russian forward's body is used to the grind of cross-seas travel.

"I'm already adjusted," he said Sunday morning. "It's just a matter of getting used to it."

Kirilenko did, however, cite some scientific studies that claim the third and seventh days after long-distance travel are "always the toughest one" on people's biological clocks. Those, he elaborated, are the days when your jet-lagged body feels like sleeping at unusual times and you feel like eating when you should be practicing, etc.

"This is the third (day back)," he added, "so this is going to be a tough one for the people."

Korver's body didn't wait until Day 3 to feel funky. He was pretty hammered on Day 2.

"(Saturday) morning I did not want to get out of my bed," Korver said. "I just wanted to lay (there) for 10 more hours."

Korver eventually resisted the snooze button and reported to the practice facility for treatment on his knee.

Sloan and Deron Williams were among those who also heeded the traveling advice of not sleeping the day away after changing time zones.

Williams says he's slept "regular hours" since returning Friday morning.

"It was hard adjusting while you're over there," he said. "I never got adjusted. Now I'm fine."

Ditto for Sloan. Just don't ask him to tell you what time or date it is. His internal calendar, Sloan joked, is still a bit skewonkered.

"I'm screwed up on days, what day it is," he joked.

Paul Millsap anticipated the team wouldn't struggle to get back into the swing of things.

"We had the last two days off. If you can't shake back from that, we shouldn't be in this league," said the power forward who excelled in Europe, leading the team in scoring in both games. "Everybody's got a lot of energy. I think everybody's ready to play."
