Bone fragments in yard buried long ago

ANTIOCH, Calif. (AP) — The Contra Costa County Sheriff's office says bone fragments dug up from the backyard of kidnapping suspect Phillip Garrido's home and a neighboring property probably belonged to American Indians buried a long time ago.

Sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee said Friday that while scientists at a state forensics lab were unable to pull any DNA from the bones, an anthropologist concluded the fragments were likely human, but probably buried long ago.

Investigators uncovered the bones while searching for evidence in the kidnapping of Jaycee Dugard, as well as other unsolved abductions and murders. Garrido and his wife, Nancy, have been charged with kidnapping and rape in Dugard's 18-year disappearance.

Gator bites arm off of golfer getting ball

BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) — Officials say an alligator bit off part of a golfer's arm as he leaned over to pick up his ball at a private South Carolina course.

The man, who is in his 70s, was retrieving his ball from a pond when the 10-foot alligator bit him at Ocean Creek Golf Course in Beaufort County. The gator pulled the golfer into the pond and ripped off his arm in the struggle. His golf partners were able to free him.

Wildlife workers killed the alligator and retrieved the arm in the hopes it might be reattached. The man has not been identified.

Woman strips down to deter her arrest

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (AP) — Police say a Wisconsin woman stripped in front of her children in an attempt to avoid arrest for shoplifting.

The Sheboygan Press reports that Julia E. Laack of Sheboygan was charged Friday with felony battery of a peace officer, resisting an officer, shoplifting and disorderly conduct.

The criminal complaint alleges she shoplifted beef jerky and a lighter Thursday at a store. Police went to her home. The complaint says she stripped to her underwear in front of her children and told officers they couldn't arrest her because she'd be naked.

The complaint says Laack then scuffled with the officers and exposed herself. It also indicates she'd been drinking.

Laack remains in jail Friday night. A man who answered the phone at her home declined comment.

FDA warns hospitals of CT scan radiation

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The FDA has warned hospitals across the country about exposing patients to high doses of radiation during CT brain scans, following an investigation of errors at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Hospital officials told the Los Angeles Times Friday that 206 patients got eight times the regular dose of radiation during scans used to diagnose strokes.
