SANDY — A 9-month-old boy died Thursday night from injuries police believe were caused by his baby sitter.
Jared Billette, 23, was arrested earlier Thursday for investigation of reckless physical endangerment of a child. But after Milo Doxey died Thursday night, Sandy Police Sgt. Justin Chapman said Billette will now be investigated for child abuse homicide.
"Our sympathies go out to (the child's) mother," Chapman said.
Billette was baby-sitting the infant Wednesday along with a 2-year-old girl. Billette's live-in girlfriend is a friend of the infant's mother, said Sandy Police Sgt. Bill Chapman.
After the mother dropped off the baby boy in the morning and the girlfriend went to work, Billette began watching the infant and another young girl who had been dropped off by another parent.
When the girlfriend called about 11:30 a.m. to ask about lunch, Billette told her he had to go because the infant wasn't breathing, Chapman said.
The girlfriend rushed home and called 911. The baby was flown to Primary Children's Medical Center, where doctors found severe head trauma consistent with a shaken baby, Chapman said.
Records from the Salt Lake County Jail show officials believe the injuries were also consistent with the boy's head impacting "with a surface."
Billette denied being responsible. "He said he doesn't know how this happened," Chapman said.
But other than the 2-year-old, Chapman said, Billette was the only one in the house with the infant.
