Ex-Richfield Mayor Sue Young dies
Sue Marie Young, 71, former mayor of Richfield, died Oct. 3, 2009.
She was the first woman in Richfield to be elected to any office and served two terms as mayor, from 1982-90. As mayor, she spearheaded the city's efforts to develop an industrial park, as well as a unique indoor/outdoor swimming pool.
A former member of the Utah State Board of Regents, she was the first woman to serve on the board, from 1984-89, and was the first woman to chair the board, from 1985-87.
Young had also chaired the Utah Safe Water Drinking Committee and had served on the Governor's Advisory Council on Community Affairs. She was also on the committee of the Camilla Eyring Kimball Educational chair at Brigham Young University and had served on the board of directors for the BYU Alumni Association, from 1978-79.
She was also president of the Sevier School District for four years and the first woman to serve with the Associated General Contractors, Utah division, where she was secretary/treasurer.
She had also helped managed L.A. Young Sons Construction following the death of her husband in 1963.
Young earned a bachelor's degree from BYU and received an honorary doctorate degree from the College of Eastern Utah.
Funeral services will be Friday, Oct. 9, 11 a.m., in the Suncrest 6th Ward, 891 W. 130 North, Orem. Friends may call from 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to the services. Burial in the Richfield City Cemetery at 3:30 p.m. Friday.
