Parents sent to jail for daughter's death
WAUSAU, Wis. (AP) — A central Wisconsin couple who prayed rather than seeking medical care for their 11-year-old dying daughter were sentenced Tuesday to six months in jail and 10 years probation in the girl's death.
Dale and Leilani Neumann could have received up to 25 years in prison for second-degree homicide in the March 2008 death of Madeline Neumann, who died of an undiagnosed but treatable form of diabetes. Prosecutors had asked for a three-year suspended prison sentence and 10 years probation. Defense attorneys had sought four years probation.
Marathon County Circuit Court Judge Vincent Howard told the Neumanns they were "very good people, raising their family who made a bad decision, a reckless decision."
Wildfire evacuees allowed to go home
WRIGHTWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Thousands of people ordered to flee their homes because of a 7,000-acre wildfire near a Southern California mountain town were allowed to return Tuesday as cool, calm weather aided fire crews, authorities said.
Evacuation orders for 2,000 homes and 4,000 to 6,000 people in and around Wrightwood northeast of Los Angeles were lifted at noon, although the order remained for a canyon where the fire burned one home over the weekend.
Only a few homes were in that area.
Firebreaks constructed below Wrightwood were holding, and the fire did not appear to be spreading, U.S. Forest Service fire information officer Norma Bailey said.
Murderer of child gets death sentence
BRUNSWICK, Ga. (AP) — A Georgia man was ordered to die Tuesday for molesting and strangling a 6-year-old boy in his mobile home.
Jurors in coastal Brunswick deliberated for two hours Tuesday before sentencing 61-year-old David Edenfield. He was convicted Monday of child molestation and murder in the March 2007 slaying of Christopher Michael Barrios.
Edenfield is the first of three family members to stand trial for sexually assaulting and killing the boy in their mobile home. His wife and grown son have also been charged.
