Specter calls: Becker to host a fundraiser
A Pennsylvania Democrat is looking at Utah's blues to raise some green.
After getting a cold call from Sen. Arlen Specter, D-Pa., Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker will host a fundraiser for the longtime Republican lawmaker who switched parties earlier this year.
"I literally just got a call from him," Becker said. "I don't know him personally, but I've followed his career. He is a stellar legislator in Congress. (Specter is) not only a man of great stature, but also somebody who is a great leader. I'm happy to help."
Specter, a five-term senator, is seeking re-election in 2010 and faces stiff competition from GOP challenger and former congressman Pat Toomey.
Utah will be one of two stops in the West for the senator, who will also hold fundraisers in California next week.
The event will be held at the home of one of Becker's friends at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Officials are expecting a turnout of 10 to 20 people and requesting donations of $1,000 per person.
