A man arrested last Friday in connection with the fatal stabbing of his estranged wife had planned on attacking a second person, according to jail documents.

Daniel Leonard Olivera, 33, was arrested for investigation of murder, aggravated assault and domestic violence in the presence of children. Investigators say Olivera stabbed Lisa M. Olivera, 32, to death in her apartment.

New details of the case were disclosed in documents from the Salt Lake County Jail.

The Oliveras lived in a four-plex at 2303 Green St. (640 East) along with two other adults, a 10-year-old child and an infant, according to jail documents.

The confrontation started as an argument involving the Oliveras and another adult in the house, jail documents state, and escalated into a physical confrontation between two of the quarreling parties. All names in the jail documents, except Daniel Olivera, were redacted.

Olivera got a large knife from the kitchen, prompting one of the fighting parties to flee the house, according to the records.

The argument, however, continued, this time between Olivera and another person, jail documents state.

One of the adults left the home while that argument was happening, but a few minutes later that man saw Olivera run out of the apartment. The man walked back inside and saw Lisa Olivera "laying on the kitchen table, she was bleeding from the throat and appeared to have been stabbed," the report states.

The 10-year-old child heard the argument and "discovered his mother," according to the report.

Shortly after the stabbing, Salt Lake police received information that Olivera went to a house on California Avenue belonging to his sister. She told police he showed up at her doorstep "covered in blood," according to jail records.

"She asked him what happened, and he told her that he had just stabbed (redacted). Now he was going to kill (redacted) and wanted to know where he was hiding," the documents state.

Daniel Olivera went into his sister's kitchen to grab a knife. Meanwhile, the sister fled the house with her children.

Daniel Olivera was arrested a couple of hours later. He was found on a bicycle behind a church near 1300 South and 1200 West and was picked up without further incident.

Prosecutors were expected to review the case for possible charges as early as Tuesday.

A check of Utah court records shows Olivera has a criminal record in adult court dating back to when he was 18. His convictions included aggravated assault, assault by a prisoner, disorderly conduct and attempted production of a controlled substance. Twice this year, Olivera has been arrested and taken to court because he was wanted in New Mexico on a probation violation.
