LOS ANGELES — The Dodgers' magic number for clinching the NL West is down to zero — finally.
After a season-worst five-game losing streak, they came through with one game left in the regular season and beat the stubborn Colorado Rockies 5-0 on Saturday night with a five-run seventh triggered by RBI singles from pinch-hitters Ronnie Belliard and Mark Loretta and six scoreless innings by 21-year-old lefty Clayton Kershaw.
Los Angeles' second straight division title wasn't as easy to secure as it appeared to be last weekend, when it held a six-game lead with seven games remaining. The Rockies, who were 15.5 games behind the Dodgers on June 3, entered this three-game series having to sweep to win their first division title in the franchise's 17-year history.
BREWERS 5, CARDINALS 4: At St. Louis, Ryan Braun reached 200 hits for the first time on a two-run homer in the first inning, and the Milwaukee Brewers went on to beat the St. Louis Cardinals to ensure the NL Central champions will open the postseason on the road.
NATIONALS 6, BRAVES 4 (11): At Atlanta, Justin Maxwell hit a two-out, two-run homer in the 11th inning and the Washington Nationals beat the Atlanta Braves for their sixth straight victory.
The Nationals, who have the worst record in the majors at 58-103, sent the Braves to their fifth loss in a row.
CUBS 5, DIAMONDBACKS 0: At Chicago, Randy Wells allowed three hits in seven strong innings and struck out a career-high 10, helping the Chicago Cubs beat the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Wells (12-10) gave up a leadoff double to Stephen Drew and then retired 14 straight before Eric Byrnes hit a two-out single in the fifth. Wells' 12 wins are the most by a Cubs rookie since Kerry Wood had 13 in 1998.
METS 5, ASTROS 1: At New York, Pat Misch pitched five solid innings before his outing was cut short by a long rain delay and the New York Mets beat the Houston Astros.
Fernando Tatis had two hits and two RBIs for New York, which scored all of its runs with two outs.
REDS 8, PIRATES 4: At Cincinnati, Joey Votto homered and drove in three runs and Scott Rolen homered as the Cincinnati Reds took advantage of Zach Duke's control problems to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates.
MARLINS 4, PHILLIES 3: At Philadelphia, Anibal Sanchez pitched seven strong innings to lead Florida to win over Philadelphia, who still clinched home-field advantage for the first round of the playoffs with St. Louis' loss.
PADRES 2, GIANTS 0: At San Diego, left-hander Wade LeBlanc held San Francisco to two hits in seven innings and struck out a career-high eight to lead San Diego to a win over the Giants.
