Native American bones believed to be more than a thousand years old were found near Fillmore last week.

Three local boys had been riding all-terrain vehicles when they pulled up next to a sand dune and spotted a bone sticking out of the sand, Millard County sheriff's deputies said. The boys dug around and located several other bones and what resembled a human skull.

Deputies were called to the scene on Sept. 25 and excavated several human bones that appeared to be "very old and brittle." The remains were taken to the Medical Examiner's Office for identification.

The State Archaeology Division of Antiquities proclaimed that the bones were Native American and probably more than 1,000 years old. The state archaeologist will continue investigating.
