KANAB — A Phoenix native was killed after driving his car into a guardrail and careening out of control near Kanab Thursday.
Dino Ortega, 39, was traveling east on U.S. 89 about 30 miles east of Kanab when the accident occurred about 12:09 a.m. He was driving from Salt Lake back to Phoenix when he drove off the roadway and was ejected out the rear window. He died on scene from the injuries, the Utah Highway Patrol reported.
The passenger was transported to Page, Ariz., for minor injuries.
Officers are investigating alcohol and speed as possible factors in the crash. Witnesses reported the vehicle had been traveling recklessly, troopers said.
Ortega was not wearing a seatbelt.
