Here's a sampling of documentary TV shows that are all new to DVD.

"The Universe: Seasons 1-3" (History/Blu-ray, 2007-09, 10 discs, $179.95). Even more stunning in this high-definition edition, the visuals are half the joy of this exploration of space, which mixes fact with speculation and utilizes footage from NASA, as well as computer graphics.

Extras: widescreen, 43 episodes, documentary: "Beyond the Big Bang," featurette, slide show ("Season 3" is also available separately on Blu-ray, 12 episodes on three discs, $69.96)

"In a Dream" (IndiePix, 2008, $26.95). Obsessed Philadelphia muralist Isaiah Zagar and his tumultuous relationship with his wife are the subjects of this family portrait, filmed over four years by their son, Jeremiah Zagar. Surprisingly intimate and revealing, a very personal project that becomes quite compelling. (Not rated but contains nudity and some foul language.)

Extras: widescreen, deleted scenes, audio commentaries, short films, music video, trailer

"Outlaws & Gunslingers" (Mill Creek, 2009, $14.98). These documentaries attempt to offer a more realistic portrait of Billy the Kid, Wild Bill Hickok, Wyatt Earp, Jesse James and others, than we see in the movies.

Extras: widescreen, five episodes

"Ax Men: the Complete Season Two" (History, 2009, four discs, $39.95). Logging teams, many from families that have done it for generations, tackle timber deep in forests on a seasonal basis. The bump for this season comes from loggers who go underwater and another team that utilizes helicopters.

Extras: widescreen, 13 episodes, deleted scenes

"Warriors: the Complete Season One" (History, 2009, three discs, $34.95). Green Beret Terry Schappert hosts this look at weaponry and battle tactics used by Mayans, Vikings, samurais and other historical warriors.

Extras: widescreen, 10 episodes, audio commentary, featurette

"Manson" (History, 2009, $19.95). Yet another documentary on the infamous Tate-LaBianca murders by the Charles Manson "family," with photos of evidence and re-creations with actors — but this one does benefit from interviews with lead prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi; Deborah Tate, sister of victim Sharon Tate; and especially Manson follower Linda Kasabian.

Extras: widescreen

"Baseball's Greatest Legends: Diamond Memories" (Mill Creek, 2006, $14.98). Several baseball greats are profiled, including Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Roger Maris, Willie Mays, Jackie Robinson, etc.

Extras: widescreen, nine episodes, extra episode

"Sam Kinison: Wild Child" (Mill Creek, 1987-93, two discs, $14.98). Four Kinison cable specials, including "Breaking All the Rules" and "Outlaws of Comedy," demonstrate the late comedian's rowdy style. Also here is a tribute show about Kinison by his brother.

Extras: full frame, five episodes, dress-rehearsal footage, photo gallery
