UTAH VALLEY

CROSS COUNTRY: Mary Nothum and Chase Englestead have been selected as Great West Conference Runners of the Week for their performances last Saturday at the prestigious Roy Griak Invitational at Falcon Heights, Minn. The awards were announced Wednesday by the conference office.

Nothum, a junior from Washington, Mo., finished sixth out of 193 competitors at the meet held at the University of Minnesota's Les Bolstad Golf Course . She completed the 6K race in a time of 21:53 and led her team to a fourth place finish. The Wolverines finished behind Iowa State, Minnesota and Michigan State and ahead of such teams as Washington State, Alabama-Birmingham, Connecticut, Oklahoma, Air Force, South Dakota State, Army, Northwestern and Great West foe South Dakota. There were a total of 18 teams participating in the meet. This is Nothum's second straight Great West Runner of the Week award.

Englestead led UVU on the men's side as he finished the 8K race in 48th place with a time of 25:55. The senior from Panguitch, Utah, helped Utah Valley place 10th overall out of the 18 teams and 167 runners that competed. Iowa State also won the men's race.

Utah Valley has now won four GWC weekly Runner of the Week awards on the season, as Nothum previously received the award Sept. 23, and freshman Jason Lynch won it back on Sept. 9.

SNOW COLLEGE

FOOTBALL: The National Junior College Athletic Association has named Snow College quarterback Quinn Mecham (Timpview High School) the National Offensive Player of the Week.

Mecham led the Badgers to a 47-14 dismantling of Glendale Community College Saturday, completing 20 of 27 passes for 340 yards and six touchdowns.

Mecham has passed for 1,355 yards in five games this year. He leads the nation in touchdows thrown (20) and touchdown to interception ratio (10:1), throwing just two interceptions to the 20 touchdowns.

"Quinn has been the type of quarterback that we knew he would be," said Snow College head coach Steve Coburn. "He makes great decisions and makes very few mistakes."

Mecham has led the Badgers to a 4-1 record and the No. 9 ranking in the country. The offense is averaging 415 yards a game going into the Badgers contest at Mesa Community College Saturday.

It's not the first time Mecham has been honored with the title. During his freshman campaign, Mecham was named national offensive player of the week while filling in for injured quarterback Jon Eastman, who now plays at Colorado State University.
