KEARNS — A 44-year-old man has been charged with sexually abusing a 17-year-old girl in a hot tub at a busy recreation center.

After swimming laps in the pool at Kearns Recreation Center on April 5, the young woman got into a nearby hot tub to relax, according to charges filed in 3rd District Court. That's when prosecutors say Javier Enrique Torres, of West Valley City, approached his victim and started talking to her.

Torres touched her inappropriately and "forced her to touch" his genitalia, the charges state. He then told her to get out of the hot tub and meet him in the facility's steam room. She used the opportunity get away, found her brothers at the whirlpool and sat down with them.

Prosecutors say Torres followed her to where her brothers were and again touched her inappropriately.

Torres is charged with object rape, a first-degree felony, and two counts of forcible sexual abuse, a second-degree felony.
