High school football: Weber resurgence rolls on in win at Bonneville
WASHINGTON TERRACE — Leaves are not the only things undergoing changes this fall. Once a perennial doormat in Region 1, Weber is quickly transforming into a team who finally appears able to continue a season past October.
Attitudes have changed to the point that the Warriors are no longer satisfied watching other teams enjoy success at their expense.
"We know we got to work hard," senior receiver Bo Thomas said. "Nobody is going to roll over. We know we got to work hard to get a win."
That determination has turned Weber into a force to be reckoned with on both sides of the ball — a reality that Bonneville experienced firsthand on Wednesday night. The Warriors dominated the Lakers offensively and defensively for the bulk of four quarters on their way to claiming a 21-14 victory.
On defense, Trevor Bingham had three sacks while Cory Hart and Spencer Bushwell each came up with an interception to keep the Laker offense from finding much rhythm. Things clicked equally well on offense where Bonneville could not figure out how to effectively contain senior running back Cody Van Buren.
Van Buren amassed 185 and a touchdown on 24 carries. Combined with a pair of nice kickoff returns in the fourth quarter, he totaled more than 300 all-purpose yards.
The senior credited his offensive line for making the blocks to set him up for big gains.
"They just make the holes big enough for us backs to run through," Van Buren said. "We got the easy job here. They're the ones that got to get up front and block the big guys."
While Weber was dominant on the ground, it was through the air that they struck first.
Dallin Adams found Thomas for a 30 yard touchdown pass on the first play of the second quarter to put the Warriors up 7-0. Adams found Thomas again, this time for a 20-yard grab, to cap a 5-play, 70-yard drive that boosted Weber to a 14-0 advantage with 9:51 left in the third quarter.
