OGDEN — Three armed burglars posing as police officers forced their way into an Ogden home Tuesday, believing they were going to find a bunch of men. Instead, police say, they startled a family.
The trio, carrying two sawed-off shotguns and a pistol, entered the home on the 100 block of Patterson Avenue around 2 a.m. using a sledgehammer, said Ogden Police Lt. Scott Sangberg. The men "represented themselves as police," telling those in the home that they were officers and were there to collect drugs, money and guns.
Police believe the men targeted the house thinking it was owned by a group of drug-users who had lived at the address previously. Sangberg said they most likely didn't know a family had moved in.
Two of the men went downstairs and another went upstairs before one of the family members was able to call police. When someone in the family confronted the men, stating that they weren't wearing anything to suggest they were cops, the men fled, Sangberg said.
The burglars, who were outfitted in dark hooded sweatshirts and bandannas, fled through the back door to the south and two were able to get away on foot. A third man tried to use the getaway vehicle, which was parked in an alleyway behind the house, but was apprehended by police. He was arrested for investigation of 10 charges, including aggravated burglary and possession of a deadly weapon.
The 28-year-old Roy man was also arrested for investigation of various drug charges as he had both methamphetamines and mushrooms with him at the time of the arrest.
