Driver's death may be medically related
TOOELE — A man died in what looked like a minor one-car accident Tuesday, leading investigators to believe the man's death may have been caused by a medical condition.
Mark Rooney, 53, of Stansbury Park, was heading south on state Route 36 in Tooele County just before 9 a.m. when his vehicle veered off to the right, then corrected to the left, Utah Highway Patrol officials said.
The man's vehicle continued to drift, crossing all lanes of traffic, an access road and two dirt banks before coming to a stop. The vehicle did not roll, the airbags deployed properly, and the man was wearing a seat belt, said trooper Cameron Roden.
The accident may have started as a "medical situation," because there was only minor damage to the vehicle.
"As far as injuries to him, they couldn't see anything," Roden said. "The outside of the vehicle didn't receive much damage, either."
Rooney also showed no obvious signs that he had been impaired while driving, though troopers believe the vehicle may have been speeding.
The accident is the second to have turned fatal in Tooele County in two days. Maria Romero, 65, of New Mexico, died Monday on I-80 after a blown tire caused the vehicle she was riding in to roll, officials said.
