GOLF: Sophomore Jeff Holmes is 1-under and tied for 14th as he leads a young Utah Valley University squad thru two rounds of the Purple & Red Invitational at Valley View Golf Course in Layton.

The Wolverines opened with a 295 in the morning round and were four shots better, with a 291, in the afternoon and are tied for ninth with Utah State, one shot behind Gonzaga. The third and final 18 holes will begin on Tuesday morning.

"I'm very happy with the direction we're going. You can see by the scores that we're headed in the right direction," said coach Clark Rustand. "We are still making freshman and sophomore mistakes and once we correct those things we're going to be where we want to be. Right now it's a process, but these guys will get there and that's what I'm excited about."
