WOMEN'S SOCCER: In a physical battle against instate-rival Utah State (4-6-1), No. 17 BYU (9-2-1) came out with a 3-0 win Saturday in front of 3,148 fans at South Field.

The game had the second-highest crowd this season and the fifth shutout for the Cougars.

The 3-0 win marks the first regular-season game where the Cougars have won by more than two goals this season. The last time the Cougars posted a deficit of two or more goals was on Nov. 13 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, beating Virginia Tech. 2-0.

The Cougars were led by Alyssa Vander Veur with five shots on goal while Kassidy Shumway added four and Carlee Payne posted three.

Cougar goalie McKinzie Olson tallied two saves on the night.

The Aggies gave the Cougars a scare in the 14th minute, right after Cougar keeper Erica Owens subbed. Utah State had a breakaway down the field and would take the shot on goal. Owens slowed the ball through her fingertips in front of the open net where Hermann Trophy Candidate Andrea Willis would clear it out of Cougar territory.

BYU held off Utah State for the rest of the game, playing 21 of the players on its roster.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY: In the final preparatory competition for the season's first major meet next weekend in Wisconsin, the Cougars earned a solid victory at the Bob Firman Invitational in Eagle, Idaho.

They came in first place with 28 points as sophomore Katy Andrews led the way with a first-place individual finish. She finished the 5K race in 17 minutes, 59 seconds, a new course record at Eagle Island State Park.

Trailing with about 700 meters to go, Andrews took charge on the downside of a hill and was able to overcome Boise State's Shannon Porter with a final surge.

Coming in second for the team and fourth overall was redshirt freshman Ashlee Thomas (18:15), followed by Rachel Lange in sixth

(18:18), Lacey Cramer (7th, 18:21), Sarah Yingling (18:32,11th). Sarah Frey (14th), Michaelanne Laurent (18:49, 16th), Katie Swanson (18:50, 17th), and Nicole Nielsen (18:50, 18th). Freshman Lisa Drury, an Eagle, Idaho native, ran unattached and earned an eighth-place finish in 18:26.

Idaho State came in second place with 44 points, followed by Boise State (86), Northwest Nazarene (100), Utah (101) and Central Washington (171).
