High school football: Wolves, Lancers keep going in opposite directions
LAYTON — The Fremont Silver Wolves just keep continuing their rapid improvement from 2008.
The Layton Lancers can't stop going the other direction.
Fremont quarterback Brody Garr completed 18-of-21 passes for 189 yards and three touchdowns and the Silver Wolves scored on four of their first six possessions as Fremont defeated Layton 33-16 on Friday night at Lancer Field.
"We have a great group of seniors," Fremont head coach Kory Bosgieter said.
"I'm so proud of our kids because we had a lot of kids miss practice this week from sickness. They battled in there."
Fremont (3-2, 3-3), which finished 1-9 overall and dead last in Region 1 just a year ago, finds itself right in the middle of a fight for first this year.
With the win, Fremont remained just two games out of first behind Davis, which edged Northridge 21-17.
Bosgieter doesn't want to get caught up in the excitement just yet, though.
"We're still working," he said. "We'll work for next week. ... I'm worried about Northridge on Wednesday. We have a short turnaround."
The Lancers (0-4, 1-5), who entered the game still looking for their first region victory of the season after finishing first the last two years, suffered once again from the same problems which have plagued them all year — an inability to get the defense off the field, as well as an inability to mount any sort of consistent passing attack. Fremont didn't punt the ball once Friday night, and Layton quarterback Derek Thomas completed just four passes.
Despite the offensive struggles, Layton managed to strike first Friday night after Thomas took the ball on the fourth play of the game and went 63 yards down the sideline for a touchdown. The point-after attempt was muffed, though, and the Silver Wolves wasted little time answering back. Fremont senior Ty Willie took the ensuing kickoff 90 yards for the equalizer.
"That's huge," Bosgieter said. "They score (but) we come back and counter that score. That's huge for us. We take a lot of pride in our kickoff returns. We hadn't returned one, so it was time."
Layton marched down the field again on its next possession, but this time had to settle for a 27-yard field goal by Grant Walker.
Fremont's defense took over after that, not allowing another score until midway through the fourth quarter with the game well in hand.
