OGDEN — An Ogden man who was supposed to go hunting with his son Thursday morning turned his gun on his wife instead, police said.
The 51-year-old man was brought home by his son around 5 a.m. before the pair could go hunting because his son felt he was "not acting right," said Ogden Police Lt. Scott Sangberg. The man's son returned him to his home near 270 Century Drive, where the man began to watch TV.
He watched TV until his wife, who had been sleeping, heard him "doing something with his weapon." Sangberg said the man then opened the door to the bedroom and told his wife he was going to kill her.
"She became frightened and convinced him that wasn't the right thing to do at that moment," Sangberg said. "She fled, running through the front door, and then he cranked off a round, but missed her, thank goodness."
Sangberg said the round of bullets instead went into a neighbor's truck, and the man's wife was able to call the police from a neighbor's home. Sangberg said the man was in the yard "making a lot of commotion" when police arrived, but he was arrested without incident.
He was arrested for investigation of aggravated assault and domestic violence, criminal mischief and possession of a weapon. Police said alcohol "played a major role" in the incident, but the man had also taken some prescription medication.
